Here is a simple explanation of how to take out the trash in Japan.If you’re just visiting, or staying longer as a student or worker, knowing the rules will help you avoid confusion.

In Japan, trash must be sorted carefully. Each city—and even each neighborhood—may have slightly different rules. But in general, garbage is separated like this:

Each type is collected on a different day. For example, burnable trash might be picked up on Mondays and Thursdays, while cans and bottles are collected on Fridays.

To follow the rules:
