Urashima Taro

PLAY / STOP

Urashima Taro stood at the edge of the sea, holding the tamatebako in his hands. The waves gently lapped at the shore, but the world around him felt cold and unfamiliar. The village he had once loved was gone, the people forgotten, and time had left him behind.

He remembered Otohime’s warning: “Do not open this box.” But now, alone in a world that no longer knew him, her words felt distant—like echoes from a dream.

What harm could it do, he wondered, just to peek inside?

With trembling fingers, he loosened the silk cord and slowly opened the lid.

In an instant, a cloud of white mist burst forth, swirling around him like smoke from a forgotten fire. He tried to step back, but it was too late.

The strength left his body. His back hunched, his hair turned white, and deep lines spread across his face. In a matter of moments, the young fisherman was no more. He had aged hundreds of years—just as the world around him had.

The box fell to the sand beside him.

No one knows exactly what was inside the tamatebako. But some say it held the time he had lost. Others believe it was a final gift from Otohime — a reminder that the past cannot be reclaimed, and that every gift has its cost.

And so ends the story of Urashima Taro — a tale of kindness, wonder, and the passage of time.
